Preventive Maintenance 2013 – Various Roads
Due Date: Ongoing
This annual project falls under the category of "keeping good roads good" by applying an inexpensive surface treatment (microsurfacing) that slows the aging process of asphalt pavements. Our high desert environment with intense UV radiation, arid conditions, and wide temperature swings, ages the asphalt binder that glues the aggregates together. These environmental conditions are major factors in the deterioration of roadways in the Truckee Meadows. Micro surfacing is referred to as "Oil of Olay" for streets and protects the road from those very conditions as well as providing a wearing surface. The preventive maintenance program saves millions of dollars in reconstruction and user costs by keeping the overall condition of the regional road network at an optimally cost effective level. The regional network is on a 7-year cycle and PM12 is the 9th year of the program and, therefore, many regional roads will be receiving their second surface treatment. The program consists of three contracts: patching – to repair localized failures; crack sealing – sealing existing cracks to prevent moisture infiltration; and the microsurfacing contract – this includes sealing approximately 60 or 70 streets which translates into 12 million square feet or 200 lane miles of pavement.
